Retrospectiva Wii U (parte 1) – Uma Promessa de Novos Tempos?
Tendo em vista a proximidade de lançamento do Switch, o nosso leitor Emanoel Vitor Barbosa nos deu uma sugestão de termos uma retrospectiva do Wii U. Por isso, preparamos essa série de posts em que contaremos post a post os anos de vida desse console tão bom e que tantas alegrias nos deu. Dito isso, vamos começar!
O ano era 2011, mais precisamente junho. A Nintendo já havia anunciado que trabalhava em um novo console de mesa para suceder o tão bem-sucedido Wii. Até então ninguém sabia do que se tratava o novo console, seria ele voltado para o público mais “hardcore” (como a Nintendo já havia declarado) ou seria voltado mais para um público mais “casual”, como foi o Wii (sucesso absoluto de vendas)?
Bom, a E3 chegou e finalmente soubemos do que se tratava. Um console híbrido – não como o Switch – voltado para o público “hardcore”, bem como para o casual. Segundo eles, seria um console para nós jogarmos juntos ou para você jogar sozinho, e o nome escolhido é Wii U (uma brincadeira com a sonoridade We e You do inglês). Bom, a meu ver a escolha do nome não foi a correta, visto que muita gente acha até hoje que se trata de um acessório para o Wii. Acredite: existem pessoas que até hoje acham que o gamepad é na verdade algo como o Kinect, porém para o Wii.
O lançamento foi em 2012, no mês de novembro, para aproveitar as vendas do natal. O console foi lançado sozinho e muita gente esperava ansiosa pelo lançamento. O console vendeu 3 milhões só em 2012. Essa quantidade foi a mesma que vendeu o seu antecessor Wii no lançamento, porém o mercado esperava mais tendo em vista que a expectativa era de que a Nintendo pudesse abraçar boa parte da base do seu console anterior. Os concorrentes da geração, PS4 e XOne, venderam em seu lançamento 4.12 e 3 milhões respectivamente.
Essa quebra entre realidade e expectativa se deu muito pelo fato de o console não ter jogos “casuais” (estilo Wii Sports) no lançamento, e isso incomodou muito o público, afinal, essa foi a grande razão do sucesso do Wii, não foi? Um hardware já defasado em relação à geração que se desenhava, não trouxe o público “hardcore”. Aliado a isso, a Nintendo já demonstrava na época uma falha que seria crucial durante toda a vida do Wii U: a falta de um marketing que apresentasse o console ao mundo e aos consumidores. Basicamente, quem conhecia o Wii U à época eram as pessoas que já jogavam videogames e acompanhavam o noticiário.
Havia outros erros no conceito, incluindo o próprio gamepad (o qual eu particularmente acho o melhor controle que já joguei na vida). A promessa de ser uma tela auxiliar que poderia ser utilizada para gerenciar itens, mapas e outras configurações agradou muito aos jogadores. Todavia, a bateria, a possibilidade de apenas um gamepad conectado ao console, a curta distância na qual o gamepad parava de responder (impossibilitando a portabilidade dentro de uma casa) e o custo dele foram os primeiros a sofrer duras críticas da imprensa especializada.
Em dezembro de 2012 o que era uma promessa de novos tempos se tornou um futuro incerto. Não desanime, pois o Wii U é amado por todos que tiveram a chance de conhecê-lo. Ele ainda teve anos excelentes a sua frente, mas isso vamos falar nos próximos posts.
